Mizensir is one of those houses I find myself returning to again and again. Its founder and master perfumer Alberto Morillas has created hundreds of fragrances, including creations for Gucci, Armani, Bvlgari, Brunello Cucinelli, and Calvin Klein, and his talent hardly needs an introduction. Yet his house, Mizensir, feels particularly interesting because it gives him the space to explore ideas that feel deeply personal.
Chiffre Royal is one such creation, and while it initially struck me as perhaps a little too heavy for my current taste, it soon became impossible to ignore.
The fragrance opens with fresh bergamot and a soft, subtly sweet, velvety rose before moving quickly into its real focus: woods. And not simply one woody note, but an arrangement of different rare woods that gives Chiffre Royal its depth and character. Among them is Dreamwood, a fascinating material with a creamy, sandalwood-like quality. It adds softness to what could otherwise have been a much darker and more austere composition.
There is some oud in it as well, but, thankfully, not overly heavy or animalic.
Chiffre Royal carries something quietly luxurious. It is creamy, polished and remarkably smooth, with that almost spotless quality I often associate with Morillas' work. At the same time, it has considerable weight. This is not a fragrance I would recommend overspraying, particularly in warmer weather.
What surprised me most was how quickly it became addictive. My first impression was that Chiffre Royal might not be for me. I have been gravitating towards softer, lighter fragrances lately, and in the Sicilian summer heat, its woody richness felt almost excessive. And yet, I kept reaching for it.
Day after day, I found myself spraying it again simply because I wanted to smell it.
That is perhaps the best compliment I can give a fragrance. Chiffre Royal has a magnetic quality that draws you back to your skin, making you want to stop and smell it again. It is not necessarily an immediately easy perfume, but it has enough depth to reward spending time with it.
I find it very unisex, although there is a slight masculine edge to my nose.
Chiffre Royal is certainly not a safe blind buy, and I would strongly recommend trying it on skin before committing to a bottle. But if you appreciate sophisticated woody fragrances with a creamy texture, understated luxury and a quietly addictive character, this is one worth discovering.
